CAHSEE Preparation Tips-Do’s and Dont’s

Basic CAHSEE preparation starts with some simple knowledge. This article will help any student who is preparing to take the CAHSEE perform at their best.

Do get a good night’s sleep before the day of the exam. Studies show that a full eight hours of sleep the night before not only increases your brains ability to focus more clearly, it also helps to decrease stress and anxiety levels.

Don’t procrastinate and wait until the last minute to start preparing for the exam. The longer you wait to begin preparing for the exam, the less time you will have to adequately study all of the material that the exam covers. Also, the longer you have to make yourself comfortable with the different topics covered, the more self assured you will be come test day. While trying to cram information at the last minute may seem like a good idea, studies have shown that the knowledge is rarely retained using this method of study.

Do focus on one content strand at a time. By allowing your mind to concentrate on one particular area of study or content strand at a time, you are increasing your brain’s ability to retain the knowledge and incorporate the various components of each strand together n a logical order. Bouncing around from topic to topic not only makes the studying process a lot more difficult, it also decreases your mind’s ability to retain the information you are studying in an organized and practical manner.

Don’t save the hardest subjects for last. While many students prefer to focus on the topics they know best first, saving the more difficult sections for last, this is actually the opposite of the recommended method. No matter how far in advance you begin studying, you will always wish you had started sooner. As exam day quickly approaches, studying becomes more difficult since your mind is beginning to enter panic mode. This is not the time to be spending on your problem areas. By getting those out of the way first, if you do begin to run short on time, you’re only cutting your study time for the subjects you already know you are strong in.
