I got so fed up with it this summer that I decided to remodel the back of the house to make it easier for them to get their things off there, and not in the living room. I decided to put a mudroom right inside the back door. A mudroom is a space designed to make going inside and outside easy – you can leave your things there, and since it’s easy to clean, it’s not nearly as big a deal.

To give my kids a place to hang their jackets up and put their shoes away, I had mudroom storage lockers installed for each of them. These lockers are big enough for them to put their coats, snowsuits, and dirty pants away, without causing a mess. There are cubby holes underneath for their shoes.

And since I wanted to make this as easy as possible, I also put up a shelf right next to them, and grabbed some freezer storage baskets from the garage to set up. These are big enough for their hats, scarves, and gloves, and since they’re right next to my kids’ lockers, it’s easy enough for them to use.

Which is the big victory here. My kids are going to take the path of least resistance, so it’s important that it be simple for them to put their stuff away. Now it is, and so when they come in I can rely on their cleaning laziness to… keep the room relatively clean.

If you have space in your home for a mudroom, I highly recommend it, but even if you don’t, I still encourage you to try and figure out a system that makes it easier for your kids to be clean than dirty. Trust me, it’s well worth it.
