Do It Yourself Credit Repair

You may have noticed in the last couple of years there seems to be a rather large increase in the number of companies that offer to help you repair your credit. The truth is that there really is not some credit repair secret that they are using.   You can restore credit on your own, if you are willing to dedicate the time. First you will need to get a copy of your credit reports from all three credit reporting agencies Experian, Equifax and Transunion. You can get a free copy once per year. The website to get all three credit reports is annualcreditreport.com. When ordering your credit reports make sure you have all your personal information on hand such as social security number, current and previous addresses, current and previous employers and phone numbers.

Once you have received your credit reports (you will be able to print them on spot so have printer paper handy) go over every detail with a fine tooth comb. Look for any information that is not correct. Information such as incorrect addresses, unapproved inquiry’s, incorrect accounts and payment inaccuracies all have a detrimental affect to your credit rating and credit score. Once you have found all inaccuracies on each credit report, it is time to call the credit agency. You should contact each agency and advise them you wish to file disputes. Each item that you dispute will be removed from your credit for thirty days while they try to validate it. Keep in mind that you can’t remove accurate statements from your account but you can dispute anything. If the credit bureau is unable to validate it, then it will be removed from your credit forever. Credit bureau phone numbers are Experian 888-397-3742, Equifax 800-685-1111, Transunion 800-888-4213. Remember simple things such as incorrect addresses and credit inquiries should be challenged if they are incorrect as they have a affect on your credit.
