Do You Really Want to Dress Up Your Dog?
Psychologists believe that owners who insist on dressing up their dogs have deep-rooted problems. And a survey carried out by the folks at About Your Dog, among those who do favour the practice, would seem to confirm this belief.
Most of those we interviewed were childless couples, for whom the little animal was a baby-substitute.
One middle-aged couple in the south of England told us they had tried for a baby for years, sadly without success. Various forms of treatment had been unsuccessful and by the time they thought of adoption, they were considered to be too old.
Both were animal lovers and when a little stray dog followed them home from the shops one day, they couldn’t believe their luck. Here, they believed, was the answer to their prayers.
Having made all the usual enquiries as to the little dog’s original owner, they hit a blank and were eventually able to keep him.
Shortly after the newcomer’s arrival in their home the weather turned very cold. And that was when all the subliminal maternal feelings of the wife came to the fore. She picked up her canine ‘baby’, took him to an animal outfitter and bought him a wardrobe full of small dog clothes.
‘Cuddles’ can now be seen walking between his proud ‘parents’ along the leafy lanes of Kent in a variety of snazzy outfits. And judging by the constant tail-wagging, he doesn’t seem to mind a bit.
We have seen him in a tracksuit, a Liverpool FC football strip and even something resembling a dirty mac (after rolling over and over in fox poo).
Mr and Mrs D are so pleased with the little chappie, that they are now thinking of getting him a girlfriend.
‘We know that when the time is right a little companion will turn up, just like Cuddles did. And we’ll be ready for her,’ said Mrs. D. ‘We’ve seen some lovely wedding dresses for girlie dogs,’ she added.
She went on to explain enthusiastically that the supplier in question also had a wonderful supply of Christmas and fancy dress outfits, as well as bathrobes, shrugs and life jackets. Her dog-owning friends had all been recommended to that website, she concluded.
It takes all sorts….
