Functional and Decorative Umbrella Lighting

Unexpected and unique lighting solutions are becoming more difficult to come by. This is strongly due to manufacturers putting more emphasis on lowering costs and streamlining production than spending the time needed to create a truly unique product. Many outdoor light fixtures have the same look and feel. Whether you observe path lights or wall mounts, you see the same designs over and over. For this reason, many people are searching for new and unique ways to light up their backyards.  This is actually a lot easier than it may sound- you just need to know what to look for.

If you have a patio umbrella or plan on buying one, you are already half way there. While patio umbrellas are mostly used for shading, they can also become an excellent backyard light source. With the addition of patio umbrella lights you can turn your umbrella into an outdoor lighting fixture. This results in an unexpected type of illumination that your guests are sure to love. These lights are universal, meaning that they can be used on just about any type of outdoor umbrella.

Solar technology is used in many of these lights because they are so easy to use and maintain. Powered by a solar panel, these lights are ready to be used right out of the box-no connection to a power source needed. Other models use rechargeable batteries that need to be charged after every 30-40 hours of use. And of course, there are ones that plug into the wall, which are the most reliable but require an extension cord.

There are two basic types of umbrella lights, each of which are easy to install and use. The first type attaches directly to the umbrella pole. These disc-shaped light modules clip onto your umbrella pole in seconds. The disc has LED bulbs that line the edges, shining bright light onto the area below. These are purely functional in nature and are good for reading, eating and talking under.

The second type of light comes with several strings of lit sections each of which attach to the umbrella’s frame. Similar to holiday lights, these strings dangle underneath the umbrella for a cool effect. They come in more colors than the pole modules and provide a great way to express creativity. String lights are often built into pre-lit umbrellas, eliminating the need to buy the umbrella and lights separately. On a pre-lit solar light umbrella, the solar panel sits directly on the tip on the top.
