Getting Candy Machines Located
Getting your machines on location has got to be the worst part of the whole vending business. I like servicing the route, counting my quarters, and doing bookkeeping, but I dread finding new locations. Unfortunately it’s a major part of the vending machine business and will ultimately determine whether you are successful or not. In any given year you will need to locate about 5% of your locations. This will be due to businesses closing, owners wanting the vending machines removed, or just because the location isn’t meeting profit expectations. Whatever the reason, it’s a pain.
There are few things you can do to make placing machines easier. You can affiliate with a local or national charity which gives you an “in”. It makes you more attractive to business owners if you’re helping a charity. This usually costs you $1 per machine per month which goes to the charity and is tax deductible and you get a sticker you put on the front of your machine which makes it easier to get a machine placement. A lot of non-profits already have vending programs established or you can try to get one started in your home town. This is a win win for both you and the non-profit.
A second option is to give the business owner a cut of the take. Personally I don’t use this option, because I only do smaller bulk candy machines and the owners take would be ridiculously small, but in the case of higher volume locations or with full line vending, this is definitely an option.
If you’re really creative (or desperate) you could line up some cute kids to help you. What business owner would want to turn down a kid trying to raise money for a band trip? In return, you could pay them a flat fee or something like mentioned above with the non-profit – $1 per machine per month. This could end up also benefiting both you and the community.
No matter which method you opt for, there is no doubt that machine locating is a hassle but with a little creativity, you can get it done.
