Keeping Roaches out of Your Kitchen

There are many things that a home or apartment owner must deal with, from water damage to losing power to faulty plumbing. Pests are certainly not excluded from the list, and roaches are one of them. It may seem incurable, but it is possible to deal with these bugs and get them away for good, as long as the proper steps are taken.

Roaches, like every other living creature, need something to eat in order to survive, and they will seek it out when needed. For this reason, it is vital to keep the kitchen area as clean as possible. Do not leave dirty dishes out on the counter, sink or table for several hours or overnight unless it absolutely cannot be helped. Do not make this pointless by keeping dirty dishes in other parts of the home; the roaches will only follow that and explore in other places. Whenever it can be done, wipe down any soiled surfaces and inspect for crumbs. The trash should be taken out frequently and covered with a lid at all times. This should also help in keeping roaches out of your kitchen.

Do not give the roaches anywhere to hide and settle in. This can be achieved by making sure that there is no clutter in the kitchen, such as sloppy stacks of paper, overstuffing of appliances on the counter, and so on. Cover any cracks or possible entryways for bugs in the walls and windows.

Food such as cereal and pasta that have been opened should not be kept in the open or inside cupboards. Yes, even if they are in a box and the rest of the kitchen is spotless. Just the slightest hint of an accessible food supply for them can cause problems. Place these foods in large zipped bags or jars to deny any roaches of their feast.

Roaches and other known pests are a part of life, but that does not mean one should have to sit down and live with them in the home. In keeping roaches out of your kitchen, knowing what to do and how to properly handle it can mean a dwelling free of roaches.
