Managing forklift liability
Forklift accidents are extremely costly in your warehouse. Electric pallet trucks are extremely useful, however they can be extremely dangerous if they are not used with respect. Accidents can cost thousands of dollars of damage to inventory, physical property, along with potential loss of life. Keep in mind that accidents will occur when you least expect them to. Make sure that your staff is well aware of the consequences which can occur from warehouse accidents.
Forklift operators must be properly licensed, and 18 years of age. Never let unlicensed employees operate your material handling machinery. This is not only an insurance liability risk, but you can also face the risk of being involved in an injury lawsuit. Keep in mind that lawsuits can occur, even if the accident was not your fault. Make sure that your warehouse staff is always adequately trained. They should be sent to an OSHA certified class on an annual basis. Injuries from accidents can also be minimized, as long as your staff was instructed to wear proper helmets when operating their fork lift truck.
If you do not have the budget to send your staff away for training, you can also consider using an online training courses while. Online OSHA certified training courses will cost much less however they are just as effective as regular classroom training sessions. You can find these online over the Internet, or ask your local forklift dealer. It is also a good idea to reward your staff to encourage them to attend safety sessions. A good idea is to set up a competition where the highest scored test takers received a prize or some other sort of incentive. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, when it comes to warehouse safety. Make sure you do all the little steps to mitigate the chances of being involved in a factory warehouse injury claim.
