Moissanite Engagement Rings Gaining Popularity

It came as quite a surprise to find out that diamond sales have been in a steep decline over the last few years. After all, diamonds have pretty much been THE stone to have on your ring for many years now – many decades, in fact. So why, then, have diamonds suffered from such a loss in popularity? Well, there are a number of reasons.

The main reason probably has to do with the unethical practices engaged in by diamond firms across the world. A lot of light has been shed on the conflict diamond industry – it turns out that diamond firms have been exploiting and fuelling ethnic conflicts in African nations, all in order to gain the rights to mine the diamonds (not to mention the cheap labour with which to do so). This has had a terrible impact on the reputation of the diamond industry, and rightly so.

A second reason has to do with the fact that customers are finally realizing that diamonds are heavily overpriced. They are not actually rare – in fact, diamonds are quite commonplace; however, diamond firms control and restrict the supply very tightly, in order to create the illusion of rarity. This, in reality, is where diamonds’ reputation for rarity comes from – it is purely artificial.
Nowhere has this had a bigger impact than in the world of wedding and engagement rings.

Diamond cushion cut engagement rings, once a staple, are now on their way out, and they are being replaced with diamond substitute products, such as moissanite engagement rings. In addition, a lot of people are turning to stones that are less commonplace than diamonds – rubies and sapphires, for example. This is a good thing for the world of jewellery styling, because it means that wedding rings, once seen as a staid and conservative field of fashion, are becoming more and more experimental, not to mention cooler. Ultimately, what matters is that customers now have more choice, and that is never a bad thing for fashionistas.
