Potential Problems With Long Term Storage

Americans love to get a lot of stuff, and they love stuffing it away into storage. The whole notion of cramped attics full of things that we’re holding onto ‘just in case’ has become the rule rather than the exception, which may or may not the best way for us to be. Here are a few potential problems that can arise from having so much stuff that you literally cannot manage it effectively.

Mold is your enemy. Mold will creep in if you leave anything slightly damp in the attic. I’ve seen it ruin an entire box of stuffed animals before – animals my daughter loved and was very sad to see go. I’ve learned my lesson though, and for anything that has a lot of sentimental value, we have a large collection of stackable plastic storage bins that we use to keep them sealed away from the air. Make sure they’re dry, and put them away. It’s worked flawlessly for us for years now.

Not everything needs to go into plastic bins though. We also have plastic toys and things like wooden blocks that will be just fine in the attic. For all those kinds of things, you’re likely safe with cardboard storage boxes that will serve to just keep them organized. Clutter is your next big enemy, because once the place gets out of control, it’s going to take you days to get everything back in a proper order. Try to have some form of organizational system up front to avoid this.

This is the main issue of any attic – how to keep things clean and how to keep them arranged. Begin your attic storage by having a solution (even a temporary, simplistic one) and you will save yourself a lot of headache in the future. This will help prevent the day that you climb up into the attic and have no idea where anything is.
