Does Suboxone really work for overcoming an addiction to opiate pills? Yes it can certainly help but there are some things that you should realize too. Here are some key points that many people may not realize about Suboxone maintenance:
1) It is expensive. The actual cost of Suboxone is right around 7 dollars per pill as of the time of this writing, and that can work out to quite a bit of money over the course of a month. Most people take the pill either twice a day or even three times per day, so you can see how quickly that will add up. Not all insurance or funding sources cover the drug either. Of course, most of us who were addicted spent even more than this on our drug of choice, but in recovery, things are a bit different. You no longer do the things you used to do in order to get money for drugs.
2) It does not always work. People have a tendency to believe that Suboxone treatments are fool proof, and that no one could possibly relapse who has been put on this maintenance. In fact, the data and the trials only show a modest success rate for this type of treatment, not the slam dunk that you would expect from giving people a maintenance dose of a partial opiate twice a day. The bottom line is that the people who want to make it work really have to put in a full effort, even beyond their use of the maintenance drug.
3) It can help medicate pain. Let’s say you were suffering from hydrocodone addiction due to an illness or injury, but you started abusing the medicine and now you want to get off of it. What is going to happen with your pain? Well if you are put on Suboxone, that can help medicate your pain while keeping you away from your real drug of choice. People who suffer from chronic pain can sometimes benefit greatly from this aspect of the medication.
