What are Dog Crates?

To some people the very words ‘dog crates’ makes them envision poor animals kept in cages.  However the owners of dog cages swear by their usefulness and that their dogs love them.

Back in time, when dogs were wild animals, they lived in dens.  These were generally caves or hollow places in tree trunks and the dogs used them because they knew that they were safe while inside and that nothing would be able to attack them from any direction bar the entrance.  This instinct remains today and you may notice that your dog generally chooses to sleep somewhere in the house where he is protected on several sides and often above.  Many dogs go and lie under a table or squeeze themselves in between the arm of an armchair and the wall.  By providing your pet with a dog kennel he will have his own, properly designed, den.  Here he can relax and sleep, safe in the knowledge that nothing can sneak up behind him.

Dog cages are a different type of kennel.  They tend to be much larger and you would need to keep it in the garden.  The idea is that your dog will have enough space to run around, get some exercise and play, as well as rest and sleep.  A chain link dog run is very light and easy to construct and will keep your dog in a secure place when you are out of the house.  You will just need to ensure that you buy one that is large enough for your dog to be able to pick up some speed while he is running from one end to the other.

By putting a bed and a good supply of toys into the crate your dog will enjoy the time he spends in there and will be quite happy for you to go out for a while and leave him.
