I grew up in a tropical country, where exquisite materials and panoramic views can amaze the eyes. These objects and views are best appreciated under a particular blend of the atmosphere, nature, and weather condition. Given such introduction, I am talking about a particular furniture that is commonly used in a tropical environment. And that is a wicker chair.
Before we go further, let us define the term “wicker.”
A wicker is a hard-woven fiber or a supple twig that is often made in most parts of the Southeast Asia region. It is either made from a plant origin or a plastic fiber. Then, the finish product will be made in rigid furniture and baskets. The usual materials used to create a wicker are cores of cane of rattan stalks, willow, reed, rush, or bamboo. A wicker, when produced, becomes a light and robust material. And so, a wicker is perfect for making furniture that can be used in the patio or in the porch.
It was said that the 20th century Arts and Crafts movement predisposed the artistic elements of wicker furniture. Also, historical facts showed that in ancient Egypt, pieces of furniture made in wicker were already in use. Wicker baskets are also part of the artifacts discovered in Pompeii. Subsequently, extensive crafting and usage of furniture and baskets made of wicker are observed during the Iron Age.
Types of wicker furniture
The natural wicker. This is a furniture characterized by sturdy frame crafted from natural plant origin.
The synthetic wicker. This type of wicker furniture is made up of plastic or resin. A synthetic wicker furniture is best when placed outdoor, because its composition is durable and defiant against humidity, water, and the sun’s UV radiation. Among the many pieces of furniture that are made of wicker, a wicker chair is the most commonly used.
Perhaps, you may be quite confused with pieces of furniture that are labeled as wicker or rattan. In fact, there is no specific material as a wicker. As explained earlier, a wicker is produced from weaved rattan stalks or other plant origin or plastic fiber. The wicker is the product of knitted rattan, a relative of the palm tree. Basically, weaved rattan stalks become the frame of the wicker chair and then other materials can be used as the body of the furniture.
If you want to make your outdoors look simple but fashionable elegant, especially when you live in a tropical country like the Philippines, wicker chairs or other wicker-made pieces of furniture are just perfect.
